Starting a Blog: Week 5

Week 5 Pin
Hello my dear readers! For those who don’t know I decided that I wanted to chronicle my experience of starting a blog. The intent is so others can learn what it takes to start a blog, learn from my mistakes throughout the process, and to hopefully provide some humor and enjoyment to your day. If you want to learn how to start a blog, I created a tutorial on how to do so through Bluehost.

I’ve decided these weekly updates will be posted once a week (most likely Saturday) and will consist of 6 categories. I decided to separate Income I earned from Income I received. I think it will be easier for you and me to track this way.

  1. Blog posts that I published
  2. Personal Accomplishments
  3. Extra Income I earned
  4. Extra Income I received
  5. Goals I accomplished during the week
  6. Goals for Next Week

I know this will be very similar to my monthly income reports, but I think having weekly and monthly goals are going to help me stay focused and break my bigger goals down into smaller ones. This should help me in accomplishing my monthly goals, but also allow me to celebrate additional small successes that may happen throughout each week.

So this is the end of week 5 of the life of my beloved blog. I am very excited to share my accomplishments from this week.

Blog Posts:

This week I slacked off a bit due to celebrating over the weekend with my husband’s graduation and our anniversary. However, I still managed to pump out two professional posts this week.

You can check them out here: The Advantages Money Give You and 9 Reasons to Start a Blog

I think I may be taking a week off from publishing content soon though to work on improving the overall design and layout of my blog. I’ll keep you posted once I decide to do this. I think this will be in June since that is when I should receive my first paycheck with my new increase in salary.

Personal Accomplishments:

I joined an email blog tutorial through Michelle’s Making Sense of Cents Blog. I hope this will help improve the quality of my blog! She is one of the bloggers who inspired me to start so please check her out if you want! She made over $71,000 last month alone! (Future goals right here)

I finally approved our editing plans for our wedding video…kind of late I know but hey better late then never. I also gave some more editing notes for our wedding photo album. Again late, but hey give me a break.

I finished 2 books this week! I love reading and am always trying to read more, while remaining productive, and maintaining a good work life balance. Listening to audio books while driving to and from work really helps with this. Sigh…one day I hope to be able to read for hours and hours at a time without worry.

I got my car inspected while I was back in my hometown earlier this week. Thankfully everything was fine so we didn’t have to pay anything besides the inspection fee.

I renewed the registration on my vehicle. I guess I registered late last year because my tags say my car needs to be renewed in June, but the DMV website says my tags expire May 31. So, I just went ahead and took care of it.

I followed up on an auto claim that I filed back in March when someone else hit my car and then drove away. I filed a police report and contacted my auto insurance company to file a claim at that time, but just followed up this month. This follow up conversation did not go very well as it turned out my auto insurance company had closed this claim and did not inform me of this. They also did not follow up at all. So I will be needing to look for a new auto insurance company this upcoming week and continue to follow up with this.

I made three meals this week including Fiesta Supreme, Stuffed Bell Peppers, and Chicken Taco Soup. My husband made pasta one night also. This meant we did not eat out at all until this weekend which was fine because our grocery budget should be very small this upcoming week.

I also watched some new movies and shows. I finished “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” series on Netflix, and watched “The Road Within” on Netflix which was actually a really great movie. My husband and I also watched the movie “DeadPool”. Very funny movie but not child appropriate at all! Often, I find that I prefer to re-watch series or movies that I loved instead of trying something new. I think this is because I don’t want to waste my time on something I might hate. Honestly, this mentality makes absolutely no sense, since I love trying anything else that is new like traveling to a new place, meeting new people, eating new food, reading a new book. So I’m glad I’m starting to branch out.

Extra Income I Earned:

(If you are interested in learning how to earn extra income or spend money more effectively, check out my Recommendations page.

Surveys: I am still working on growing my various survey accounts. I am going to start keeping track of each account so I can know where I stood, but for this week I will just post what I currently have in each account and update from here on out.

American Consumer Opinion: $1.10 in my account currently

Inbox Dollars: $15.87 in my account currently

Swagbucks: $2.59 in my account currently

Mystery Shopping: This week alone I earned $39 from completing various mystery shops! I hope to continue to grow this, but sometimes I am only able to complete smaller tasks. However, I think $39 in earned income from this in one week is pretty great. Considering I probably spent 2 hours total completing these I earned almost $20 an hour each week from this!

Affiliates: I actually earned $2.00 from one of the affiliate partners I have. I have no idea when I should be expecting this payment but hey it’s a start!

Extra Income I Received:

I am super excited because my husband and I actually received a lot of extra income this week! Some of it was expected, but most of it was very unexpected! The total amount of extra income we earned this week was $1,478.08.

Surveys: I have not received any payments from the survey companies I use yet. Honestly, I really need to step up my game in this area because I haven’t really been trying.

Mystery Shopping: I am super excited because I received another check from the mystery shopping company I work with this week! This one was for $34.00 and I’m expecting these checks to continue growing.

Ebates: I actually have 2 checks from Ebates but only one of them came this week. I just never cashed the one I received back in March. The March check was for $1.31 and the check I got this week was for $11.50. So total that is $12.81 in Ebates checks!!

Miscellaneous: So, we actually had quite a few checks come in this week and one of them was huge!

The first check came from my husband’s employer who offers education reimbursement up to $2,000 if I am not mistaken. Not a lot but still worth something. Due to this, they reimbursed us for the cost of my husband’s last class which was $1,400. So we now have our emergency fund fully funded and we agreed that we are going to use $1,000 of this refund to put towards one of our loans.

The second check was from a settlement from some unfair charges found to be charged by one of Steve’s old banks. This check was for $26.50 and unfortunately I don’t know much about this.

The third check was from an ATM settlement for $4.77. Again this was from one of Steve’s old banks so I don’t know much about this.

This Week’s Goals:

(I decided that each week I will set 10 small goals for my blog. All of them should be helping me reach my bigger goals that I set each month.)

  1. Join 5 group Pinterest boards – Pass!
  2. Publish 2 of my scheduled posts (I did not publish anything on Monday so I will work from there) – Pass! I posted Advantages Money Can Buy You and 9 Reasons to Start a Blog
  3. Get 1 week ahead in prepared content – Fail. Sigh, I am hoping to do this this week.
  4. Grow my business Pinterest account followers from 161 to 200- Pass! I currently have 217 followers on this account!
  5. Grow Twitter followers from 11 to 20- Fail. I currently have 16 followers on Twitter. I am having a hard time figuring out how to grow this account. I will continue working on this.
  6. Earn $20 in extra income- Pass! I earned $39 from mystery shopping alone!
  7. Create a business plan (I actually wrote down some ideas for my business plan but I need to create a schedule for this)- Fail. I did not do anything with this.
  8. Network with 3 new bloggers – Fail. I didn’t do this. I am going to schedule networking in my business plan though.
  9. Fix one design issue on my blog – Fail. As I mentioned above, I think I am going to be taking a week off from publishing content to work on improving this. I don’t think I have time to create content and design my blog. However, I may have a lead on someone who can help with this issue!
  10. Work on my tumblr page – Fail. I haven’t even looked at this. Sigh….

Next Week’s Goals:

  1. Publish 3 posts.
  2. Create a business plan.
  3. Network with 3 new bloggers.
  4. Grow my business Pinterest account followers to 300.
  5. Grow Twitter followers to from 16 to 25.

choices around that I’m completely overwhelmed ..

    • Hey Lucila! Thanks for reading my blog! I personally recommend choosing Bluehost as your hosting platform. Bluehost will help you set up your blog through WordPress. I DO NOT recommend a free platform if you are wanting to monetize your blog. I wrote a “How to Start A Blog” if you want some more information. If you decide to use Bluehost, you are welcome to use my link to sign up: http://www.bluehost.com/track/livingfullyandfree

    • Yes I get a lot of spam comments. Thankfully I have it set to approve everything before it shows in my comments section. I don’t know of a plug-in but if you find one let me know!

  8. Hi are using WordPress for your site platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and set up
my own. Do you need any html coding knowledge to make
your own blog? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • Yes I use WordPress.org not wordpress.com. I use Blue Host for my hosting services. I find owning my own blog and having access to the support Bluehost provides is really important as I try to monetize my blog. I know absolutely nothing about HTML coding! Any advice you have is welcome!

  9. Very nice post. I just came across your blog and wanted to state that
