Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone!
I hope you are enjoying this time to remember and celebrate. In case you need some ideas, I’ve made a short list of things you could do to honor Memorial Day or to celebrate. I recommend honoring those who have served or are currently serving, but also spending time to celebrate the freedom they fought to protect. If you would like some ideas for how to spend your day, check out the Office of Public Affairs page here: http://www.va.gov/opa/speceven/memday/
- Attend a Memorial Service
There are many areas that provide a Memorial Day Service to honor those who have died while serving our country. This is a great way to honor our troops as we remember their sacrifice.
There are many places you could volunteer, but if you wanted to volunteer specifically in remembrance of Memorial Day, I would recommend searching online for opportunities in your area. These opportunities could include volunteering at a homeless shelter, at a national cemetery, or at a museum or historical site.
- Write a Letter of Thanks to Military Members or Friends
I’m sure we all know someone who has served, or a family who lost a loved one due to their serving in the military. How nice would it be if you wrote a letter of gratitude to them. I’m sure they would appreciate it.
- Visit a Memorial
I live in a big metro area so there are lots of memorial sites to visit. If you live in a smaller area this may not be as much of an option for you, but there are typically memorials of some sort in every location. Just be sure it’s a memorial that honors those who have fallen during service.
- Visit a Cemetery
The National Cemetery is definitely the best one to visit, but there are soldiers buried in practically every cemetery. If you decide to pay your respects, just be sure to be mindful of where you are and those around you.
- Attend a Memorial Day Parade
Many areas will have a parade in honor of Memorial Day. This is something you could attend that can be fun and can honor our troops.
- Tour a Historical Site
If you live in or near a larger area, you may be able to visit a historical site of some sort. Visiting these can be very informative and memorable.
- Visit a Museum
In my area the national museums are free to visit, but in your area this may not be the case. However, this could be a very fun and affordable thing for you to do. Museums are also about remembering our history and many times include history involving our soldiers.
- Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance
The National Moment of Remembrance is something you can do that is super easy and free. To honor and remember our troops it is customary to pause for one minute out of your day, stand quietly, and remember those who gave their lives while serving our country. Typically, this is done at 3:00 pm local time. If you would like to learn more about this event you can do so here: http://www.va.gov/opa/speceven/memday/
- Thank Someone Who Has Served or is Serving
I’m sure we all know a military member who deserves our thanks. Make sure to express it today.
- Host a BBQ to Earn Donation For Troops
With this 3 day weekend, I know we all want to be able to have some fun as well and a BBQ is a very popular way of doing this as it is also the unofficial kick off of the first weekend of summer. However, a great idea for throwing your own BBQ is using it to raise money for our troops. If you don’t have a grill, you could grill out at a park. If you would like more information on how you could do this I found a website that provides information for those in the state of Illinois. However, you could do this where ever you are. Here is the link: http://usoofillinois.org/bbq-for-the-troops/
- Have a Picnic
Celebrate our freedom by having a picnic if the weather allows.
- Visit a Lake
Lakes and ponds are exciting and fun ways to celebrate Memorial Day, especially if you know someone who has a boat. Swimming, tubing, jet skiing, and fishing are all fun ways of spending time on the lake.
- Go Biking
Hopefully the weather is beautiful on this Memorial Day so you can enjoy a nice bike ride around your area to celebrate.
- Spend Time With Loved Ones
Memorial Day is also about remembering how our lives are precious so be sure to spend time with those you love while remembering those who gave it all.
I hope you are having a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! Share below ways you chose to honor and celebrate on this important day!
